All-England Theatre Festival

THE LADYBIRDS at Western Area Semi-Final at theMERLIN THEATRE, FROME on SATURDAY 7 MAY 2016

Best performance EVER! But up against very stiff competition we didn’t *quite* make it to the final but adjudicator’s comments were amazing and even in the announcement of the winner, Tish Wells’ performance was highlighted yet again. Well done Ladybirds! The perfect way to bow out. Emily

Colyton Theatre Group in the All England quarter final of the One-Act Play Festival

CTG Ladybird PicDear Friends

Thank you for all the enthusiastic messages of congratulation following the success of The Ladybirds and Sailors Beware.

We now have details of the quarter final of the All England Festival, also to be staged at the Blackmore Theatre, Exmouth.

The Ladybirds is on first in the evening followed by a group from Bovey Tracey who will be performing Departure by Stephen Smith, a comedy with deeper tones based on the author’s experience of being stuck in an airport lounge, this explores reactions by optimistic and pessimistic families. The other groups involved are St. Austell Players (play title not known) and Stage by Stage youth group, Exmouth with The Perils of Pauline, who take part in the afternoon performance.

Obviously, we would be thrilled to have some support in the audience for our next round. If you can clear the space in your diary…
Box Office number is 07905 761485, Theatre number is 01395 27668.

Regards
Sue Whitell (Secretary, aka Babs in Ladybirds)

CarnivalColyton Carnival -The harbinger of autumn, Colyton’s Carnival week, has come and gone. Those of you who made it to the streets to watch the carnival procession will know that the Theatre Group was well represented with a show of colourful and imaginative costumes worn by members of the group who had their display illuminated, serenaded and advertised by the car leading the way. Our carnival play was a great success. We had a full house, the performance was first class and very well received and the excellent supper was swiftly and efficiently presented by the lovely wenches on duty that night.  We were pleased to receive compliments on both the performance and the supper. If you missed the performance, there will be another opportunity to see it. You will not be able to benefit from the same supper, unfortunately but read on and discover another great opportunity for a meal out with friends.

Half term – We would like to offer an event for our junior members during half term. Some suggestions have been workshops for singing/acting/dancing skills or a trip to the Northcott Theatre. Theatre MasksWe are keen to attract more directors and will be happy to hear from anyone who wants to give this a try. If you are interested, but feel you need to polish up your skills before ‘going it alone’ please get in touch. We would like to offer shadowing opportunities for a variety of the roles needed in putting on a performance. This would give people a chance to see what is involved and discover the skills needed. We have another way of giving you a chance to become more involved. We are looking for a social secretary who could assist with gathering ideas and organising events to allow the group more opportunities to get together on an informal basis.

Unfortunately, we have to postpone the Revolting Rhymes event.

Keep an eye on your newsletter and come along to meet new people and get involved in as many ways as you can.

If you have any general queries about anything in this letter, please contact Sue Fouracre on Colyton  01297 552915. Sue, as most of you know, is the Chair of the Theatre Group Committee and she will be pleased to hear from you.

Lyn Henley, 12 December 1941- 27 September 2015

sLyn_6006363Members of Colyton Theatre Group will be deeply saddened by the recent death of Lyn Henley. For more than twenty years she has been at the heart of every aspect of our activities. A memorable actress; we recall her roles in Blithe Spirit, Steel Magnolias, The Dresser, Katherine Howard and many other plays. She was also an often inspired director of many pantomimes and, with her husband, Drewe, of more serious works as well. She was a choreographer, organiser of social functions, a committee member for years and, recently, our Chairman.

Although Lyn carried the burden of caring for Drewe she never refused to take on any additional work for CTG if asked and always with that warm sense of humour which was so typical of her. We shall miss her.

David Clarke (President)

Lyn’s funeral will be held in Combpyne on Monday, 19 October at 2pm. Lyn’s family has requested that, where possible, this is to be a cheerful occasion and would prefer black not to be worn. All are welcome.
