The Ladybirds and Sailors Beware

In February we had an evening of two one act plays. Margaret Smith did a wonderful job producing both Sailors Beware by R.F Delderfield and The Ladybirds by Tony Layton. The Ladybirds production in particular was a huge success and we got to the All-England semi-final in Frome. Sadly we did not get through to the final, but much fun was had by all. Our fabulous producer Margaret Smith had this to say about the productions:

“What an amazing achievement to reach the semi-final of the All-England Theatre Festival. I know I am biased but I can honestly say it has been a privilege to work with such a wonderfully talented cast and crew, who all grew together in strength over the many months it took to produce the ‘The Ladybirds’ and of course ‘Sailors Beware’. ‘Sailors’ won the shield for most exciting presentation at the Exmouth Festival, which is thanks, in the main, to our wonderful wardrobe ladies Cathy Mason, Wendy Cann and Margot Sharp, such a talented group of gals who always provide a wonderful confection of glorious costumes – an award well-deserved.

“Tish Wells won Best Actress for her role as Marge in ‘The Ladybirds’, a character she superbly portrayed; I think all of us were in awe of her masterful acting agility.

“I was also blessed to receive an award, but most importantly we won ‘BEST PLAY’ which clearly highlighted the amazing talent of the whole cast who created a wonderful piece of theatre with such aplomb!

“We were successful again in the regional semi-final, taking us to the All-England semi-final in Frome. This was ‘The Ladybirds’ finest performance in my opinion, every player gave their all. They were indeed ‘winners’ in the truest sense of the word, I couldn’t have been more proud. A troop from St Albans was selected to go forward to the final, clearly a very experienced group.

“We have learn’t much from this extraordinary journey. Colyton Theatre Group has much to be proud of. The camaraderie, the laughter, the friendships that have been forged are what it is all about.

Thank you Tish Wells for your fabulous Marge, Cynthia Bell for your delicious Betty, Debbie Meakin for your delightful Faye, Jeanette Sutherland for you masterful Francesca, Sue Whitell for your fun and wit, Steph Letten (our novice actress) you were superb! Sue Gunn-Johnson for your scrumptious vicar’s wife. Emily Thomas and Bob Whitell as our adjudicators and Sandra Henson for being such a trooper.

“Thank you to our wonderful crew, Hilary Briers, Sue Fouracre, Tony Robinson, Bob Whitell, Emily Thomas and John Newton – ALL working together as a team, each depending on the other, giving our audiences a slice of theatrical magic.

“Colyton Theatre Group continues to captivate and entertain. We welcome ALL, old and new members to join in the fun.”
